What are Dental Crowns?

Dental Crowns also known as “caps” are custom fabricated, tooth-shaped covering placed on an existing tooth. To prepare for a St Petersburg dental crown, the tooth decay or fractured area is removed and the outer layer of the tooth is shaved and shaped. Following the preparation, an impression of the tooth is taken and sent in to the laboratory. A custom tooth crown is made matching the shade, shape and size to your natural teeth. Sometimes a build up or post-core build up may be required for stability and strength, to replace lost tooth structure before capping the tooth.

The placement of a crown (or cap) may be necessary when a tooth:

  • is fractured
  • has a failing or leaking filling restoration
  • is cracked or broken
  • had root canal therapy
  • has large decay

Types of Dental Crowns

There are many different types of dental crowns. Common materials used in modern dentistry include:

  • PFZ Crowns – These crowns are also known as Porcelain Fused to Zirconia and combines strength, durability, and aesthetics.
  • Zirconia Crowns – These crowns are considered to be the strongest material and one of several newer materials that combine metal’s strength with the aesthetic, tooth-like appeal of porcelain.
  • Emax Ceramic Crowns – These crowns are made of a glass-ceramic material and provide more natural color and translucency and are suitable for those patients who are allergic to metal.
  • PFM Crowns – Porcelain fused to metal crowns. These crowns are metal with porcelain layered on top to match natural tooth shade.
  • Full Gold Cowns – Gold is an inert metal and is completely biocompatible with your body. Although these crowns aren’t that aesthetic, they are an excellent choice for molars.
  • Stainless Steel Crowns – These crowns are prefabricated and typically used on baby teeth for children to restore large decay on back teeth, as an alternative to extractions.

Are You Ready for Dental Crowns in St Petersburg?

When a tooth is damaged, there is always hope that it can heal on its own. Unfortunately, teeth do not heal or restore damaged enamel on their surface. However, we can help to protect and restore a tooth with a dental crown.

Dental crowns are a versatile treatment that can protect a weak tooth from infection, restore a damaged tooth, cover a dental implant, hold a dental bridge in place and provide a great, natural appearance.

If you have a damaged or weak tooth, schedule an appointment with us to discuss your options for a dental crown in St Petersburg, Florida.

Questions & Answers

I just want my smile to look good. What are some options to help the appearance of my smile?

You are not alone. Most people want to have a nice smile since it is the first thing others notice about you. You may be interested in a few minor adjustments or may have concerns that need more attention. Some smiles can be enhanced with simple whitening or bonding treatments. Other smiles need porcelain veneers, crowns or bridges; gum contouring; periodontal therapy or a combination of all these techniques. Dr. Powless and Dr. Matos will suggest a treatment plan for you based on your goals, areas of concern and the overall condition of your oral health. Contact us for a complimentary smile evaluation to determine what course of action will produce the best solution for you.

I want my front teeth to look better, but I do not want to wear braces. What would you recommend?

Dr. Powless and Dr. Matos have a number of ways to improve the look of your front teeth without the use of unsightly braces. For slightly crooked or unevenly worn teeth, a bit of reshaping and the addition of crowns or porcelain veneers may be sufficient to give them a bright, uniform look. Our doctors also offer Invisalign as an orthodontic option for adults and teens alike. We would be happy to talk with you further about the option that best suits your individual situation.

I really do not like visiting the dentist, is there anything you can do to help me relax?

Many people are uncomfortable with visiting the dentist. Your comfort is our highest priority. We treat our patients like our family. Our caring approach will help ease your fears and concerns about your dental care. Nitrous oxide or oral sedation is also offered to keep you comfortable and relaxed. IV and hospital sedation is available in our Tampa office, please schedule a consultation to further discuss your dental needs.

What can I expect from my first appointment?

During your first appointment, your overall dental and oral health will be assessed with a comprehensive oral evaluation. Upon completion of your medical / dental health form, we will ask you to tell us your goals regarding your smile, teeth, and gums. Digital photos and X-Rays will be taken of your teeth to identify areas of decay, cracked teeth and malfunctioning restorations. Our goal is to preserve as much of your teeth as possible by catching decay in its earliest stages. We’ll also assess your gums and recommend the appropriate hygiene treatment for you.

I want cosmetic dentistry. Does my insurance pay for it?

Dental insurance is designed to assist you in paying for your dentistry. Most procedures are not fully covered by your insurance. Cosmetic dentistry, in particular, is not covered by most dental insurance plans. To help you afford your smile, we do offer a variety of payment options in addition to a monthly payment plan provided by our financial partner, Care Credit™. We also pay special attention to maximizing the benefits that your insurance does provide. Ask our front office team how you can comfortably afford your dentistry and maximize your dental insurance benefits.
