St Petersburg Sleep Apnea / Breathing and Snoring Conditions

Do you snore at night and want to do something about it?

Between 2% and 4% of all Americans are suffering from an undiagnosed case of sleep apnea. That is one in every 50 people. When this medical issue is unaddressed, individuals are at high risk of some dangerous, and even deadly, consequences.

In fact, a study shows that around 38,000 deaths each year are related to cardiovascular problems that are in connection to sleep apnea. CPAP machines and nasal pillows are designed to prevent and treat sleep apnea in order to avoid these unnecessary deaths.

Oral appliance therapy is an effective treatment option for snoring and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). A custom-fit oral sleep appliance can improve your sleep, restore your alertness and revitalize your health. Here is a guide to help you get started with this life-changing treatment. Oral appliance therapy is covered by many medical insurance plans.

I am Ready to Get Treated for Sleep Apnea so How Do I Get and Oral Appliance?

If you and Dr. Powless decide that an oral appliance is best for you, he can have a custom oral sleep appliance made. Oral appliances are customized using impressions and models of your teeth. These models are sent to a dental lab where the appliance is made.

  1. Once your oral appliance is ready, you will return to our office for a fitting.
  2. Dr. Powless will adjust the appliance to maximize its comfort and effectiveness.
  3. You also will learn how to clean the oral appliance and maintain it.
  4. After this fitting, he may schedule you for another sleep study to verify treatment success.
  5. Periodic visits to the office will be scheduled to evaluate the fitting and effectiveness of the sleep appliance and make any necessary adjustments.

Contact our office to schedule a consultation with one of our St Petersburg dentists.  We will go over the most effective sleep apnea treatment options to suit your individual needs.

Questions & Answers

I just want my smile to look good. What are some options to help the appearance of my smile?

You are not alone. Most people want to have a nice smile since it is the first thing others notice about you. You may be interested in a few minor adjustments or may have concerns that need more attention. Some smiles can be enhanced with simple whitening or bonding treatments. Other smiles need porcelain veneers, crowns or bridges; gum contouring; periodontal therapy or a combination of all these techniques. Dr. Powless and Dr. Matos will suggest a treatment plan for you based on your goals, areas of concern and the overall condition of your oral health. Contact us for a complimentary smile evaluation to determine what course of action will produce the best solution for you.

I want my front teeth to look better, but I do not want to wear braces. What would you recommend?

Dr. Powless and Dr. Matos have a number of ways to improve the look of your front teeth without the use of unsightly braces. For slightly crooked or unevenly worn teeth, a bit of reshaping and the addition of crowns or porcelain veneers may be sufficient to give them a bright, uniform look. Our doctors also offer Invisalign as an orthodontic option for adults and teens alike. We would be happy to talk with you further about the option that best suits your individual situation.

I really do not like visiting the dentist, is there anything you can do to help me relax?

Many people are uncomfortable with visiting the dentist. Your comfort is our highest priority. We treat our patients like our family. Our caring approach will help ease your fears and concerns about your dental care. Nitrous oxide or oral sedation is also offered to keep you comfortable and relaxed. IV and hospital sedation is available in our Tampa office, please schedule a consultation to further discuss your dental needs.

What can I expect from my first appointment?

During your first appointment, your overall dental and oral health will be assessed with a comprehensive oral evaluation. Upon completion of your medical / dental health form, we will ask you to tell us your goals regarding your smile, teeth, and gums. Digital photos and X-Rays will be taken of your teeth to identify areas of decay, cracked teeth and malfunctioning restorations. Our goal is to preserve as much of your teeth as possible by catching decay in its earliest stages. We’ll also assess your gums and recommend the appropriate hygiene treatment for you.

I want cosmetic dentistry. Does my insurance pay for it?

Dental insurance is designed to assist you in paying for your dentistry. Most procedures are not fully covered by your insurance. Cosmetic dentistry, in particular, is not covered by most dental insurance plans. To help you afford your smile, we do offer a variety of payment options in addition to a monthly payment plan provided by our financial partner, Care Credit™. We also pay special attention to maximizing the benefits that your insurance does provide. Ask our front office team how you can comfortably afford your dentistry and maximize your dental insurance benefits.
